I get questioned a lot from people out of state, “What do you do there?” “Isn’t it too cold to go outside much?” “It is so hot in the summer right?” I love responding to these questions because outdoor fun is what lots of Michiganders enjoy most!

We’ve compiled a list of fun family things to do outdoors in the Greater Lansing Area – a bucket list that we will continue to update. I love finding new and fun things to do and my most favorite part about that is sharing them with you!

Lansing Family Fun’s Top Picks for Outdoor Play and Fun

Hawk Island Outdoor Play Lansing Michigan Water Kids

Water Fun – Pools, Beaches, and Splash Pads galore!

Walk or bike the path between the Michigan State Capitol and Michigan Justice Building.

Car and Bus Races at Speedway Cheer the busses on or watch the crazy eights for a blast of a night.

Fenner Nature Center Walk the trails or play in their welcome center. Their staff is delightful. Don’t miss the Maple Syrup and Apple Butter Festivals here!

Woldamar Nature Center Play at the outdoor nature park or explore in their welcome center. Afterwards, go hiking through the trails.

MSU Children’s Garden Center/Horticulture Center  Story times, walks through the beautiful gardens, butterflies in the spring, and Christmas events in the winter are a few things you’ll love about this place!

Art/Drawing Marathon Eli & Edyth Broad Art Museum one of my favorite events during the summer. There are lots of stations for the kids and demonstrations that make this a great experience.

Kayaking Lansing Outdoor Rivertown Adventures

Kayaking is easy and fun in Lansing! Check out Rivertown Adventures for a last minute trip or a planned event!

Biking You can do this with Rivertown Adventures as well!

Feed the Koi fish in their outdoor pond at Preuss Pets and visit all of the animals. This place is a dream. It’s so much fun to visit no matter your time frame to spend.

Grand Woods RC Track Parks Outdoor

RC Track Race or go Disk Golfing at Grand Woods Park in their trails along the grand river.

Beacon Field If it’s not snowing, play a game of soccer.

Horseback riding at Sundance Riding Stables or Northfork Farms and Outback.

MSU Horses Lansing Outdoor Kids

Horses at MSU Rain or shine these beauties will always love a visit. You can bring apples and carrots to feed them. It’s a relaxing and awesome experience for both kids and adults.

Outdoor Movies This is a highlight of our summers! Bring a blanket, snacks, and cozy up with friends and family to spend some quality time in our community. Delicious food trucks line each location and every movie choice is great.

Drive In Movie I picture my childhood when I think of these. Whether it be in a movie or real life they are so dreamy. This is something your kids won’t forget.

Ski or snowboard at Mt. Brighton! I sometimes forget how close a ski trip really is. Just 45 min to the coolest family adventure winter has to offer!

Hunter Park Pool Lansing

Parks and Playgrounds, and PoolsCheck out the epic parks in our area for swimming, sledding and tubing! Year round fun awaits all over Lansing.

Snowshoe or Cross Country Ski This is fun AND a workout! Take the family out for some fun QT at Fitzgerald Park and Lincoln Brick Park.

Ice Fish on Park Lake and if it’s not too cold out, play on the amazing three story play structure.

Sled, Go Tubing/sledding in during winter at Birchfield, Granger, or Hawk Island where all have snack bars.
